Doctor Priscilla Ang (A Heart of Love)
Dr. Priscilla Ang has volunteered as a tutor and a medical doctor at our Home since last year. She helps the children to catch up with their schoolwork and meets their needs whenever possible. She has also been actively engaged in similar work with the Prison Fellowship Singapore for the past ten years. Tutoring the children is no simple task. The challenges the children face growing up may mean that their starting point in education is often behind their peers, and the learning gap tends to widen over the years. Even so, Dr. Priscilla manages these difficulties patiently and tries innovative methods to explain concepts better. She uses technology such as an iPad, creative apps, or physical objects to help the children better visualise concepts. Dr. Priscilla recognises that the children require more than just an education – their emotional needs run deep. Having faced hardships, they yearn for support and direction. "Are our efforts making a real difference?" she asks. The fleeting two hours she spends with the children each week can seem like a drop in the ocean. In addition to tutoring, she also tends to the children's medical needs when necessary
When with the children, Dr. Priscilla does her best to touch their lives. She extends a special grace and love to each of them. Her guidance is beyond tutoring, as she is a role model for the children. Even though she doesn't provide direct counselling, Dr. Priscilla knows that placing her trust in the children is her most valuable contribution to their well-being. Her lessons enable them to perform better in school, helping them build up their self-esteem. Dr. Priscilla strives to make a difference in their lives by having faith in them and being a reliable presence. Despite facing challenges, Dr. Priscilla continues to persevere, knowing that the work of moulding the young requires patience and sustained effort. At the core of her motivation lies her belief in sharing God's love with the children. This conviction provides profound comfort and assurance that God can meet the children's needs beyond her human capacity. Says Dr Priscilla. The most memorable part is when the children still turn out well despite their challenges. I wouldn't say it was because of me but because of the efforts of dozens of others who have poured much into their lives.
“I hope that one day they can experience God's love for themselves.”
