K's Story

From a young age, K* faced overwhelming challenges. Diagnosed with Dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), he struggled with the basics of reading, writing, and spelling. Confronted with family violence, abuse, and neglect, K* was referred to Chen Su Lan Methodist Children's Home (CSLMCH), where he found safety and support. The caring staff at the Home helped him overcome his academic challenges while rebuilding his self-esteem and confidence.

The combination of dyslexia and ADHD created major learning barriers for K*. Dyslexia made reading, writing, and spelling hard, while ADHD caused constant distractions and focus problems. These difficulties made it nearly impossible for him to excel in a conventional classroom setting.

K* is enrolled in the Main Literacy Programme by the Dyslexia Association of Singapore, designed for children with learning challenges. Led by Lead Educational Therapist Roslan, the programme became a key part of K* educational journey. Her tailored strategies helped him overcome his reading and writing struggles. With Roslan’s patient guidance, his determination grew, and he gradually improved in his studies.

Roslan’s engaging teaching style helped ignite K* enthusiasm for learning. "I like coming to these lessons because it helps me understand things better. I feel happy," he says, appreciating the supportive and encouraging environment.

K* transformation was remarkable, thanks to Roslan’s support. Over time in the Main Literacy Programme, K* made great progress, shifting from a disruptive student to a confident participant in class. His reading and spelling skills improved drastically, earning him the "Most Improved" award at the CSLMCH Education Achievement Awards. His caseworker, Shermayn Ng observed, "K* focus and engagement have greatly improved, and he actively participates in lessons."

His story is an example of how dedicated support can transform a child's life. Through the main literacy programme, he not only made academic strides but also found joy in learning and reconnecting with others. Today, he is a source of inspiration, showing that with the right guidance, growth and change are possible.
