Lina's* Story
Lina*, an 11-year-old diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), had difficulty regulating her emotions and would sometimes engage in self-harm or harm others when she felt overwhelmed. The reunification process was challenging for Lina’s mother, a single parent to three young children. She faced limited social support while balancing caregiving duties with work responsibilities. During the pre-reunification process, professionals collaborated with Lina’s family.
They had weekly sessions and case conferences over three months to address the family’s needs. These discussions involved aligning professional’s diverse perspectives and working with the family towards shared goals. Initially, Lina and her sister had difficulty getting along, requiring weekly sessions to improve their relationship. Since then, there has been a positive change, and Lina’s sister eagerly anticipated her return, even expressing interest in inviting Lina to her birthday party.
Lina’s mother switched to a day job to better balance caregiving and work responsibilities. She also sought a fulltime job to improve the family’s finances. These changes helped prepare the family for reunification. Lina’s mother’s new work schedule aligned with her caregiving duties, and the improved relationship between Lina and her sister reduced potential triggers for Lina’s emotional struggles. The staff at CSLMCH were deeply encouraged by the efforts made by Lina’s mother and the children.
